name :: Prince of Dark Dreams

award :: international finalist (design); President's Choice Award (costume)

completed :: July 2008

size :: 1:3 scale

materials :: dupioni silk, taffeta, velvet, satin, brass, resin, epoxy clay, assorted other materials

notes :: Design submitted for the SD High Mode Competition, for doll company Volks' 10th anniversary. Because I was a finalist, they requested I complete the actual outfit for display at a Doll's Party in Osaka, Japan. I made everything except the doll, shoes, wig, and stand (I did paint him). Photos taken by the Volks official photographer; I was not present for set-up of the doll. Please refer to the composite photo to see the armor on correctly ;) Their quality is low since they were taken quickly at the event; I didn't know that I would be requested to leave the doll and costume with Volks (who later purchased the outfit). The bead applique alone on this outfit was 60+ hours (frankly, I stopped counting).

Features: silk pants; lined mandarin collar tunic in dupioni silk with pearl mock buttons and applied soutache; dupioni spats with etched brass armor, attaching with leather lace; laced corset-style cumberbund in iridescent taffeta; satin-lined silk velvet robe with hand-beaded appliques and contrast cuffs with applied silver lace. Armor with cast resin gem containing suspended watch gears, attached to formed leather shoulder pieces which are hand tooled and dyed. 8 handmade fairy wings, removable, with wire and metallic detail. Removable etched brass crown and hand-sculpted epoxy horns with iridescent shading.
